If we rotate 8 guys this year (and basically everyone does that by the year’s end), then we are close to done with picking up rotation guys:
Zakai Gainey Mashack Carr Dubar Estrella Felix
If we add Igor, that’s 8 already. If we add Lanier, that’s 9 and someone isn’t going to get the minutes they assume.
So one of the above would, in that case, be a role guy or a project. Or Ledlum out of the program this summer.

If I have to guess, I already see Gainey’s minutes dropping even if we only land one of Milisic or Lanier, unless: 1) one or more of the transfers does not give us what we hope (and that’s not some remote possibility, but may even be likely); 2) Gainey recovers the three point shooting accuracy he displayed earlier in his career. That said, Gainey may be getting more minutes as ZZ’s PG relief.

Those returning guys need to be in the gym shooting every day from now until the season if they want to play.

ZZ/Gainey/Lanier Lanier/Mashack/Gainey Carr/Dubar/Mashack Igor/Dubar/Mashack Okpara/Estrella/Phillips
Mashack and Dubar both get significant mins off the bench.
Maybe...?

I think this is going to be fascinating to watch unfold. I'm having a hard time seeing how these minutes are likely to be distributed.

I think this is going to be fascinating to watch unfold. I'm having a hard time seeing how these minutes are likely to be distributed. The more decent players you have, the more this issue arises. From a coach's point of view--or a fan's, for that matter--you would rather have too many good players than not enough. It looks quite different from a player's point of view, and that is why the transfer portal is so popular this year. Even from the coach's point of view, too many good players can still be a problem if the talent seems to stack up at the same position and/or the players who don't play become morale problems in the locker room.

Need a situational 9.
Only two starters I see right now are ZZ and Okpara. Okpara won’t finish games.
If we are protecting leads Mashack will finish games.
Lastly, this staff has to find a way to keep guys fresh. No one should be playing more than 32-33 minutes before late February.
And remember. Somebody is getting hurt.

I'll believe Carr starts when I see it with this roster. I don't have a problem with it at all, and it'll be great if he is good enough to start. But I just haven't seen enough from him yet to believe that he starts over Mashack or even the other seniors (Dubar and Gainey). But hopefully, either way, maybe we'll be as deep or deeper than ever before.

The only guy I could see playing that many minutes sooner is ZZ. Can you put my feverish mind at ease about our lack of another true PG? Do you think Gainey is a true PG? Or am I overemphasizing the need for another one in the modern game?

I don’t think you are overemphasizing, but that’s also not where the coaches emphasis lies.

Aside from Okpara all these transfers are making a big step up in competition, it’s not going to pan out for all of them , it’s just the way it works
Had Santi been even a shell of his All SEC self last year Gainey would’ve been another example of a good 3 pt shooter transfer to struggle to find his shot here ……which in reality that’s what he really was last year but he had to still play a lot out of necessity

Having that threat and production in addition to Knecht would have almost certainly gotten us into the FF. So of course, he goes into some kind of shell shock version of himself...
