. . . They were slowed by 3 guys that have played a combined 15 years of college basketball. This my hope. Barnes has never been shy about playing freshman who deserved the time, so it concerns me that neither could crack five minutes per game. But he's never had a situation where two fifth-year seniors came back after the recruiting cycle either.
Freddie did look like he was going to get 15mpg or so before the foot injury, and he got hurt at the absolute worst possible time for developmental purposes. Carr and Phillips, I don't think think were ever expected to get time this year, due to the offseason circumstances. I frankly thought (hoped) both might redshirt, so you might take the fact that they played at all as a positive.
Now, will Freddie see it that way? That may depend on who the Vols are bringing in. If they pull two wings from the portal, I might be skeptical that next year will be same song, second verse. I don't see Phillips or Carr as high risks of leaving yet.
I hope Freddie stays because everything I read or here says he’ll be very good. But I admit that in the limited minutes he has played, I haven’t seen anything that jumps out at me. He’s young, but so is Carr and I’ve seen more that catches my eye when Carr is on the court. But that could simply be because Carr is more athletic and has more “flash” to his game.

It might also be that Freddie was mostly playing PG and probably felt obligated to try to run the plays and sets Barnes wanted, and his lack of experience probably inhibited him from improvising too much, even though he seemed to have a lot of natural spontaneity in his game. Carr, on the other hand, was usually a wing and was pretty much expected to be seeking shots for himself.

In hindsight, Santi coming back hurt. He had a terrible year and we could have been developing Freddie. Probably would have ended up in a better spot.

well, that sucks, but whatever.
This is just how things are now. We will replace him with somebody really good and be just fine. I feel like the days of living and dying over guys transferring out is over. Guys are gonna transfer out, can't cry about it. Just on to the next guy.

Could’ve been a good four year player, but far from what I thought he was gonna be. I just missed on this one, I thought he was gonna be like Keon

I really don’t think it’s good for kids to do that.

My guess is he will work out pretty good somewhere. But might take a year or 2. Seems like a level headed kid and that is big trying to make it. Wish him well.

I have a feeling we are going to look back at this one as one we regret got away.

I have a feeling we are going to look back at this one as one we regret got away. Depends on where he transfers and how he fits in to the style of the coaching. Vols haven’t missed many that left other than perhaps Zach Kent…. 🤷🏻♂️

Sure doesn't seem to work out for us. Pretty sure DJ Burns and now Freddie D. did this. Come in, redshirt, hardly ever if ever play, then leave. I'm not against redshirting at all, but just about everybody we redshirt, ends up leaving. Except for Fulky, which was a little different situation.
