As Coach Harper goes down in flames in the round of 32, it is my observation from a casual distance that Lady Vol fans have become ok with mediocrity as long as it's one of Pat's girls that is in charge. Am I way off base? Recognizing that Danny has given her an extension since his arrival, does he acquiesce to the zealots in the fan base and maintain the status quo or does he show Kellie the door and bring in the best coach available regardless of their gender or diploma?

I had a great deal of respect and admiration for Pat. The folks around the program, not so much. They weren't bad people, just entitled. To be fair, I guess they figure they were there before the Lady Vols were cool and have a right to call the shots from now on. The other thing that hurts them is - kind of like UCLA and Wooden - the Lady Vols and Pat were the pioneers and staked out a huge advantage before most of the other schools were paying attention. They gave up that advantage when Pat passed from the scene. I don't think they'll get it back.

I don't think there's a ton of LV diehards here, but several of us do care. I'd say all of us were and are huge Pat Summitt fans. Yes, I have posted on The Summitt (LV board on 247) that we have to get out of the Bama post-Bryant mentality of the coach having to be someone who played or worked for Pat Summitt. If we can land a former Lady Vol who is the best person for the job, great. But there really are a lot of LV fans on that board anyway who just insist that the coach not only has to be a woman, but has to be one who has direct ties to Pat Summitt. That is why there is precious little critique of former HC Holly Warlick or current HC Kellie Harper tolerated, because too many of them will absolutely go to the mat to defend anyone tied to Summitt. I like Harper, think she's a solid coach. I don't know that she's the best that this program can do. I think honoring Summitt is to hire the best coach we can get, and support him or her. But much of the hard core fans are going down the same path Bama went down for years. Gene Stallings was the only former Bryant disciple to have any significant and sustained success, and then Bama lucked into the Saban hire. The tricky part here for Danny White is that there are a portion of militants in the LV fanbase who will skewer him if he were to decide to make a change (but ESPECIALLY if he didn't go with another former Lady Vol), but at the same time there are those who feel like if he does NOT make a change, it's evidence that he doesn't care much about women's sports at UT, all the evidence of performance over the past 2-3 seasons being ignored. The Lady Vols have won the SEC All Sports Trophy last year, and finished 2nd the year before (the men have won it the past two years).

I don’t actively follow them because one only has so much time, and I can be obsessive. So I have to draw the line.
But I did watch the two tournament games and I was not well pleased. They look stagnant on offense—no plan and no movement.
I personally would welcome a change.

I'm old, but I don't think I am old enough to be a Lady Vols fan, yet. I think I would get carded at the door.

I was hoping they could make a sweet 16 but figured they wouldn't. I saw the score come across that they lost today. I liked Kelly Jolly as a player, but it just doesn't seem to be working. Unless like you said the people that matter for that program have accepted mediocrity. For me, it's not worth the embarrassment to have someone like Mulkey run the program. So if the choices are that or mediocrity, I'm honestly fine with mediocrity. But there has to be other options.

They gave up that advantage when Pat passed from the scene. I don't think they'll get it back. Exactly. The biggest part of Pat's legacy to me is what she did for women's basketball as a whole - opening up the sport and helping to get a lot more girls excited and interested in it, and the parity began improving. Her run at UT was legendary too, but it's also fair to point out that she accomplished it mostly at a time when going into any season you knew there were no more than a handful of teams that had a shot at the national title. But Summitt had UT head and shoulders above everyone for quite awhile after she got our program built up.

The insistence of too many of the "old guard" Lady Vol fans that we must be coached by a Summitt player or assistant is hurting the program IMO, and will only help ensure that the average age of the LV fan stays well north of the median age of Americans.

They look stagnant on offense—no plan and no movement. I personally would welcome a change. It's hard enough for me to really sit down and watch a full women's basketball game as it is. But it has been harder to watch the Lady Vols the past several years. They aren't terrible, but they don't look anything like the fluid teams we used to have. But women's basketball in general is just a tougher watch because the speed, agility, skill level are just not that exciting to watch for all but a handful. Even the best players, like Caitlyn Clark at Iowa, look like a good men's rec league player. JMO
