One more thing to add about Bald Kevin and the radio days as I like to call them, most games still weren’t televised, he did absolutely hands down the best post game show I ever listened to. You just never knew what would come out of his mouth. I don’t miss the losing but I often miss John Ward and the radio days. Mississippi St. also had a good radio guy his name escapes me, maybe Munson?Larry Munson was the Georgia radio guy. Jack Cristil was the announcer for Mississippi State. He held that job for 58 years and announced his retirement after a home basketball game against Tennessee in 2011. He passed away 3 years later at the age of 88. I believe he and John Ward were really good friends. He was born in Memphis. tThanks for the info being in West Tennessee I often had to adjust the radio to catch games in those days, it was almost all AM, you had to catch the right weather, right wind direction, and then adjust the antenna on the radio as things changed. Good times

Good times For basketball, my Dad and I would sit in the car in the driveway to listen as the car radio was better at picking up the am signals. Fairly often, it was easier to pick up the opponent broadcasts than John Ward. So, I listened to a good bit of Caywood Ledford (Blue), Paul Eels (Vandy) and Munson. Eventually, our hometown radio started an FM station and became part of the Vol Network. Still snuck over to listen to the bad guy networks on occasion, especially when we were winning. It was great to listen to the Adolph Rupp Show after a Tennessee win. 😎

In Cuonzo Martin's best season at UT, he went 0-6 against ranked opponents and 4-7 on the road.

also, this is clearly the Golden Age of Tennessee basketball in the SEC Tourney. From 1970 through the 2000s the Vols did not have more than 1 multi-win SEC tourney during any decade.
In the 2010s they had 4.
In the 2020s they won the thing.

Not sure, but I think they have went to the semis 4 straight years, and the finals 3 of those years - omitting the covid year. Actually we may have a pretty impressive showing in the SECT over the last few years. Can't remember what we did under Cuonzo. Lose the first game I would suppose.

I just finished it up tonight and it's probably the most impressive part of his tenure. Will post and pin tomorrow sometime.

In Cuonzo Martin's best season at UT, he went 0-6 against ranked opponents and 4-7 on the road. And barely squeaked into the NCAAT with a pretty talented roster. Some folks point to the Sweet 16, but that team almost didn't even get into the tournament, which would have been criminal coaching malfeasance.

We have been close to winning a couple of other SEC tourneys under CRB. If I had to pick one area where CRB's results have exceeded Pearl's, it would be in the SECT.

He is 10-5 in the SECT. There is only 1 decade since the 1970s where Tennessee has more than 7 wins (and that is the 2010s (12) which also includes 6 wins from Deacon).

Our SECT futility after winning the inaugural title once the SEC brought the tourney back in '79 is hard to fathom. We have had bad teams, mediocre teams and good/really good teams throughout the period from 1980 to roughly 2010, but with a couple of exceptions one thing that was pretty constant was quick exits in the conference tourney. And so many of the losses were to lower seeds. It was mind-boggling.

I listened to every TN basketball game on the radio in my room when I was a kid, while I pretended to play point guard for the Vols on the nerf hoop above my door. I would say a fair number of posters on here did the same thing, though my preferred position was power forward. It still amazes me how many of my scores were thunder-dunks!
