Picked up this interesting tidbit on another board...
Through 9 games last year, Knecht had 173 points with 3 games of 20+ points.
Through 9 games this year, Lanier has 172 points with 4 games of 20+ points.
Now, Lanier ain't Dalton (at least I don't think), and the SOS through 9 games was tougher last year. But still...

I don’t think he’s the same level of player, but as a college scorer, he might match his numbers on less shots. He’s having the best shooting season I’ve seen from one of our guys so far. It seems like he makes every open 3.

Yeah I don't think he'll be another DK either (but then again in my almost 60 years of following the Vols we haven't had many who were in DK's class - 5 or 6 maybe). But I'll gladly take a Chaz Lanier every chance we get.

Lest we forget: Lofton through 9 games of his junior year was 39/76 from 3 (51%), compared to Lanier’s 35/72 (49%).
Ain’t never seen nothing like Lofton.
But Lanier is in that stratosphere.
The DK-Chaz comparisons are inevitable but the reality is they’re stylistically different. DK was a freak athlete who could really drive the rim for a college player, and could also shoot.
Lanier is sort of just a shooter, but he’s a better shooter than DK.
So I’m not sure comparisons make any sense really.

Lofton was also 6-2, yet he still managed to get his shot off.

Another fun, and likely related, stat is that ZZ is currently 4th in the entire country in assists per game.

That said, Lanier has been better at driving than I think we were led to believe over the summer. The comparison would be of two pretty reliable scorers. I don't know yet how they compare on the defensive end.

Lofton was also 6-2, yet he still managed to get his shot off. That was another knock against him for the NBA, but I think it was shortsighted. The guy would have been a solid NBA contributor. If guys like the Paxson brothers and Steve Kerr could find a spot, I have no doubt in my mind that Lofton could have. I think he needed to be on a team with an established star (not many Jordans out there, but someone that demanded defensive attention).

I think he was worthy of it, but was overlooked because of measurables. He just had a shooting game that was elite. Nobody is going to convince me that Steve Kerr or the Paxson brothers were better. I agree on DK and Lanier.

I agree on DK and Lanier. I understand the point your trying to make but when those three guys were roaming the 3 point line, the nba game was a different animal (80's - 90's, 2003 was Kerr's last season) than what it has become. I believe Lofton would have had a much higher chance of making it back then than what it was starting to become in the 2000's.

I’m aware of the change, but when Lofton was out, I think it was still closer to what Kerr and Jim/John Paxson played in. And honestly, given his skill set, I think Lofton could have done well in today’s game.
