The Vols are on a heater out of the gate. 4th in the nation in eFG% at 64.5% - with the 19th best offense (2nd rated D). 10 Vols have stats registered on KP and 8 of those players have eFG% over 60%, the two who don't (ZZ and Mashack) are above 50%. If you take out Cade Phillips going 1-6 the rest of the team is at 84% from the FT line. 6 Vols have taken three point shots and only one is shooting less than 37.5% (Carr at 1-4).
Zakai is 10th in the KP POY rankings.
Estrella, Phillips and Okpara all have OR% from 14% to 16%, right around top 100.
Okpara really getting to the FT line.
Evan Miya has our best two man combo as Lanier/Mashack with a 46.8 efficiency margin spread.
Hoop Explorer has ZZ, Lanier, Mashack, Milicic and Okpara as the 9th best lineup in the country.

Really good stuff. You can see the roles forming already which is rare even when there were boat loads of returning major contributors.
I like the guys we have recruited. If Carr can have consistent pop off the bench, I really like this team. That type of athlete is the player that we always feared taking over.
Nice to see Igor show what he can do.
Still really like Gainey’s pace.

We've shot the ball really well the first two games. Interesting to see if it holds, but open looks have been going down. Chaz at a smooth 58% from 3.

Chaz at a smooth 58% from 3. yep, and not just 3pt%, every player who has taken a 2pt shot is at 50% or better. strength of schedule and all, but heck, there have been times we couldn't shoot 50% inside the arc against air. |

This is really interesting stuff. I don’t know what goes into KP’s POY ranking, but I note that ZZ isn’t playing at his best yet either, and will rise most likely. If you can have an 11 turnover game among your three game sample and still be ranked that high by KP, you are doing a lot of good stuff. And I like the lineup ranking too. I hope Felix is a good FT shooter, because he may get to the line a good bit this year. |
