Rob Lewis said this today: "(Milicic) isn’t a brute in a physical sense, but he’s a tough kid whose father is the coach of the Polish national team. He has a lot of the intangibles that are associated with the new breed of ‘tougher’ European guys and also has that stereotypical ‘coach’s kid’ head for the game. Rick Barnes and Milicic’s father have had lengthy phone conversations during this (brief) process and our impression is that one reason the Vols are even under consideration here is because of Barnes’ reputation in the worldwide coaching community juxtaposed with what kind of coaching Milicic’s father wants him to receive."Interesting.

Interesting, indeed! Since I live in Charlotte these days, I have heard a fair amount about Milicic. People around here really think highly of him. He does have a nice variety of skills. I would take him for the Vols in a heartbeat.

I think Lewis is using "juxtaposed" incorrectly here, unless I'm missing something about a contrast being drawn between Barnes' reputation and what Milicic's father is wanting for his son.

There is an element of both contrast and comparison in the idea of juxtaposition. Maybe too much word for the context, though. Kudos to this community for inviting a discussion of the word “juxtaposed.” This is the stuff I’m always up for! Now, on topic, can I say that I am growing more appreciative every day of the reputation Barnes has built for himself and our program? The sign hanging out front now says, “Come here if you want to get tougher, smarter and more disciplined as a ball player.” Not a bad sign to hang out front, even if it is next to the “Final Four Wanted” sign. Edit—BTW…been lurking here for a good while. Followed Cherokee and others here when it was mentioned on 247 that there was a place for more in-depth bball discussion. HS ball coach, English teacher, preacher. Ok, carry on.

In the context of what Lewis is trying to say, I think he is trying to say that Barnes' reputation and what Milisic's father is wanting for his son are consistent with one another. That's not really how juxtapose is generally used. JMO

I think he probably meant aligned with or interchanged with. Agreed, but I also agree with preacher that this is a discussion for the Masterpiece Theater or Finer Things Club of the internet.

If you followed him, your reputation is already taking a pretty big hit before you’ve even started. Jokes aside, welcome to the club. We all hope you post often. As I’m sure you’ve seen from your lurking, there are legitimately only 2 or 3 posters that typically know what they’re talking about on here. The rest of us just learn from them and otherwise just throw crap verbal sandwiches around at the virtual water cooler here. Hopefully you’ve seen it’s a fun place to discuss hoops though. (and condiments, sometimes.)
