Spears, a senior sprinter for UT, ran the 2nd fastest women's collegiate 100m in her first outdoor sprint of 2024. She ran a 10.77 with a legal tailwind of 1.6 m/second. The only faster time ever recorded in the women's collegiate ranks is Sha'carri Richardson, formerly of LSU (and current U.S. sprinter), who is the reigning world champion, having run a 10.65. If you recall the name Sha'carri Richardson, she is the U.S. sprinter who tested positive for cannabis after winning the U.S. 2020 U.S. Olympic trials, and was suspended from competing in the Olympics.

Crazy fast for a womens sprinter. And still, always reminded that flo jo went sub 10.5 over 30 hrs ago. It’s amazing. And Richardson ran her 10.75 as a freshman at LSU I think. I do get a chuckle at the folks who would see “for a womens sprinter” and be offended by that qualification. John McEnroe years ago was raked over the coals. In a radio interview he was asked about Serena Williams, and he praised her tennis and said she was the best women’s player of all time. He wasn’t trying to force that distinction, it just came out naturally. Of course the interviewers seized on it and said “women’s, not simply the best?”. He thought they were kidding. And now some (and it’s a very small number) are trying to push the same idea with Caitlyn Clark. Anyway, I’m not trying to stir up a culture war this morning, it just caught my eye, haha.

Cannabis?? That's stupid. In no way is that a performance enhancing drug for a sprinter. It might even be performance impairing...

She was a potential gold medalist. And I can’t recall for sure, but I think it was a rule of the USOC, not necessarily of the IOC.

probably not the worst idea for the US team tyo have a rule that their members can't smoke pot.... because of the negative effects on performance.

Well, cannabis is also more dangerous today than many years ago from everything I've read. I've never been in favor of it anyway (and yes there are good arguments involving cannabis and alcohol as well as regulation of it), but I just think there are risks for individuals and society at large.

i would want my track folks to avoid alcohol in season as well. dehydrates you. sprinters do not need to be dehydrated. I'd have track athletes today avoid just about anything not prescribed by a doctor. But the sport has been so tainted numerous times by athletes taking PEDs that any time someone does something special on the track, that's the first thought in the back of the minds of folks who follow it.
