He wanted to play more . He did not have the skill set to play the four so he would have to share minutes with JP who Barnes seems committed to and Jonas if Jonas stayed. Unless Barnes was totally committed to playing two bigs for the majority of the time , he saw a limited opportunity. He has been being recruited for a while by schools closer to home . Tennessee might not have a been a cultural fit. As far as the team I hate to see him go but I personally would rather lose him than either JP or Jonas . Jonas had some real bad games but he made 2nd team all SEC for a reason . He is a much better rim protector than Tobe and better offensively . He is very vulnerable against certain types but frankly JP ought to be able to compensate . We are just in a new era that where there will be more and more turnover . Finding guys that are all SEC level players that stay four or even three years will become more and more difficult . We have been fortunate that we have had a culture that could be passed down. I don’t know if that will even be possible after the ZZ, Mashack group leaves

I don’t know if that will even be possible after the ZZ, Mashack group leaves I honestly don't see Barnes staying after next year, for the reasons you imply. It is really hard to see how a "culture" in the Barnes sense can be sustained in the portal/NIL era. The type of players remaining who would commit to such a culture may well not be good enough to compete at the highest levels. Players who are in high demand will always be in play, and it is realistically hard for me to blame them. Many old-school fans are going to be increasingly disillusioned with the current college sports ecosystem. The college sports system began as a pastime for students and entertainment for the "townies" who otherwise had little contact with the colleges and universities in their midst. It has been becoming more and more of a business all the time, but only recently have the players been able to benefit personally and immediately from the business aspect, and that has in many ways been the final step in breaking the "amateur" sports model, which many college fans still cherish, into all but unrecognizable pieces. <sigh!>
