Well deserved. I saw just down the page that UT had hired the (young, relatively inexperienced) coach from Marshall, Kim Caldwell, as the new Lady Vols basketball coach. She seems to have done fairly well at a fairly low level, but this hire will not amount to a sure-fire, slam-dunk deal to most LV fans. I would say that it would be fine, if rather unexpected, if she got it going right away, but firing her if she didn't would be less traumatic that firing another beloved LVFL. I guess we'll see!

There weren't a lot of home run hires out there that were really available. However, while Caldwell may very well work out great, she has one year I believe of D1 HC experience. She has a very successful track record, but this hire is a bit of a roll of the dice. We are essentially giving a very young and inexperienced coach (at this level) the keys to the Lady Vol program. And without much name recognition, she will instantly be recruiting against some powerhouse coaches and personalities. Those who were unhappy with the decision to fire Harper will not be happy with this hire, and frankly it's not hard to understand why. While I don't think Harper was going to get us to the next level, she did have a couple of big time recruits committed and had not missed the NCAAT in five years, with a couple of back to back S16's. That is not the Lady Vol standard, but it's nothing to sneeze at, and then hiring a coach from Marshall who was only there a year and coached at lower level programs prior to that makes the decision to fire Harper look questionable. But I do like Danny White's track record of coaching hires. So we'll see how it works out.

LadyVol mafia sure ain’t thrilled. White does have a good history of hiring ascending coaches plus it seems see likes up tempo offense and pressure defense. As with many coaches, recruiting will make or break her

Definitely a high risk, low reward kind of thing for him.

Definitely a high risk, low reward kind of thing for him. Exactly - you can't question him on the theory that he's just going to make a safe hire. Of course, I already knew that since the safe route for him as AD would have been to do nothing. Harper has made the NCAAT every year (as the Lady Vols have done their entire history since the NCAAT for women began), and she had two excellent recruits committed. Caldwell's first order of business is surely going to be to reach out to those two commits and start working them hard. Her success or failure will depend mostly (of course) on bringing in upper echelon talent.
