For a while. It takes several years to build a championship caliber team at Tennessee, as we have seen. 4 years to build the 18-19 bunch, 5 years for this one.
Doubt Barnes is here in 4 years so it’ll be someone else building it, which takes time. Next year might be the best or only opportunity for him to run it back.
Or maybe I just have to just-lost-blues

Yeah that was probably the last and best shot he had at it.

Yep. We will still be good but not top 10.
Sigh.

We are a decathlete school. Good in every event; championship level in none.

We are a decathlete school. Good in every event; championship level in none. It makes the whole year fun - in the thick of the race for great things, elite in many sports, no worse than very good in everything. But it's also frustrating to not be able to pull in a national title. That is why winning the SEC outright was such a big thing for me. We won't hang a FF banner in TBA, again, but we have another conference title.

Part of it is the SEC matters. At least to me. Somehow our redneck conference is one of the most important in the nation, which makes me happy. I don't consider myself a redneck but if they want to put me in that category, I'm fine with it.
I've worked in some multinational corporations and like they say the SEC just means more. Although I can really compare us with the EPL. It means more to them too.
Aside from that digression, I get the national championship thing, for sure, I wasn't believing when I saw that we actually did it in 1998. With some miracles.
However, I was watching a program today where pundits were talking about what's more important, the premier League championship, or the champions League. And they said the prem.
Well, that's how I feel about the SEC. I'm effing proud that this team won SEC, that was a hard slog, arguably harder than the toury.
We had heroes on tap that didn't produce unfortunately, but I'm not going to dislike them because of that.
I've never going to forget this team.

Great post and let’s not forget we won the NC in football in 1998, the year AFTER Peyton left. I’m already feeling better

One thing I do know is that as long as Barnes is around, guys develop. The horses are in the stable. Is there a Knecht in the stable? NO. That is OK. But I think the pieces for next year are better than what some think.

I think that the day will come that our beloved Vols get to a Final Four. I'm kind of doubting, though, that at my age with 70 years on the earth in sight, that I will still be around to see that Final Four happen. Still, all in all, this was one of the most enjoyable Vol seasons I've ever witnessed, and Knecht, when he really got going, was a dream to behold. I firmly believe that we will have seasons as good as this one in the future. It may be awhile though, because such seasons as this just don't come along very often for our Vols.

There are a couple “Knecht-like” guys on the roster. One of them isn’t known for it currently. Gotta keep them and develop them. Edit: by this I mean guys that can exist in a microwave and will take their shots. Not actual production

I don’t think we are far off from another great season. One or two pieces make a massive difference. What Knecht and Gainey did this year and the freedom they were given did wonders. Think about this, Gainey overall had a bigger offensive role than Vescovi. We know why, but transfers also see that just because a guy was 1st team all-conference doesn’t mean this staff won’t prioritize your strength.

For sure, Knecht wasn't "Knecht-like" himself until last year at Northern Colorado. So it's certainly possible that someone blows up like he did. But you don't see guys that do what he did very often, so I think the odds are someone playing at that level are not great. But yes, I can see that some guys - Carr, maybe Dilione - could do something like that. I don't know enough about Bishop Boswell to know if that is another person you have in mind. Is there someone else you are talking about?
