I think we need two wing shooters. Ideally one with some size to play the James role on defense. If someone leaves because of that, then so be it. The days of having a guard group that can't shoot have to be over right now. Go get two guys who shot it 40% from three last year and we're in decent shape next season if you keep Aidoo and teach him how to not get scared. I don’t think you can teach a kid “mentality”. Would love to see them make a run at Avila at Indiana State. I was as fascinated by Avila's story and game as anybody, but I just don't see him coming to UT. For one thing, that would greatly increase the flight risk of all our other posts. For another, they would have to almost completely reinvent the offense if they were to get the most out of Avila. Finally, they would likely have to reinvent the defense, as I just don't see him as quick enough to play defense as UT teams have throughout the Barnes era. Maybe he is good enough at what he does that it would be worth it to reconstruct the entire team as I suggested...or maybe you were just kidding!

What appeals to me about this kid is he is skilled. Yeah his body fat isn't what our staff values, but I think coaches devalue skills these days. I think that has been going on for a while. A criticism I've had of Tennessee coaches since Bruce. Look at what a difference having a skilled guy (Knecht), made for us this year. ZZ is skilled too (passing and ball handling). Santi was a skilled time up until this year. Look at the rest of the roster, no so much.

Especially at the college level. Skill and hating to lose can take you to the top. Not every guy can be below the average athlete, but yeah skill goes a long way. Also I would not want Avila only from the standpoint that our post play could get worse. If Estrella stops eating popcorn every time down the floor, there is plenty to like for next year.

I agree with you 100% that modern coaches seem to value athleticism over play-making skill to an almost absurd degree. A smart player who has learned how to work to maximize his skills--and strength and conditioning, if those are likely to hold him back in the immediate future--is likely going to be more effective a higher percentage of the time than a guy who developed physically at a young age and found it convenient and comfortable to dominate with physicality, to the extent that he neglects to drive himself to continue to improve. And if somehow the Vols were to get Avila through the portal, I would welcome him with open arms. I would also be shocked if Barnes did such a thing!

Gotta say the silence is deafening on the portal for us. I fully expect all hades to break loose this week. I’m finished with the jinx and curse crap so I’ll go ahead and say I’m amazed with Jefferson at this point, don’t get the entire situation. I’m really looking at who we may get to come in for a visit next weekend, I’m still guessing we add a couple of one and done guys and maybe a third with multiple years left. We are in so heavy on this November signing class we could very well go less. This week should be interesting, and I hope very good for the Vols.

Well unfortunately this did age well, now on to see who we can get. Hopefully the attrition is over. There is some posting that maybe we weren’t quite as prepared with NIL as we should have been but I’m not buying it, what we lost is all reasonable. Now if we don’t replace them with some significant upgrades in scoring call me concerned

We are in a dead period. So any contacts right now aren’t directly from coaching staffs.

We are in a dead period. So any contacts right now aren’t directly from coaching staffs. Just how much more asinine could this entire process become, you got players by the freaking 100’s entering the portal every day and the so called powers that be decide now is a great time for a dead period with coaches. Are they just trying to corrupt this process even more, everyone has to realize these kids are talking to someone associated with the programs. This is exactly how shady characters and handlers get a grip. Now someone will point out to myself a perfectly good, reasonable explanation for this but I don’t get it

Portal is dumb.
NIL is dumb.
And college sports is spinning down the dumb toilet.
My interest level is the floating turd on top of the water just about to go down the drain itself. I hope it clogs up first, but I'm not hopeful.

I don’t have a reasonable explanation.

I don't believe this is the result of any new decision. I think this is the same traditional dead period built around the annual coach's conference that coincides with the Final Four. Maybe it should change in light of the other mile-a-minute changes, but I think it's been going on for years and years.

nothing will change because our mid IQ society can't think any further than 'coaches get to change jobs'. And that is pretty much where the debate ends.

Cade Tyson and Dubar will be visiting this weekend. That’s a good sign. That’s huge. Two lights out shooters at 6’7 and 6’8 would be a dream.
