Is that Barnes probably should have taken a tech when it was clear what the refs were gonna do.
It wouldn’t have helped, probably, but you got to try.
I don’t understand why the refs give Edey that generous a whistle anyway. He’s boring and slow and it makes the game suck. Why we bailing him out? It’s not like it’s good basketball or fun.
&@(&
Anyway. Not pissed at the vols this year, at least. There’s that.

Should have doubled him earlier. I thought we had a great plan. Awaka’s hedge and recover was a thing of beauty but the refs were determined to remove him. Estrella did fine, had some good stops and got owned a few times. The late double was too slow to get there sometimes but otoh, Purdue has ways to punish you if you go too early. Idk. We are pretty quick, maybe we could have doubled harder

I think Barnes should have called Painter's comments about our fouling out, and challenged the refs not to buy his narrative. JMO But I am not disappointed in the Vols, only for them. They deserved a better called game today.

I'm still too emotional (sad) as a grown-assed man (Mike Gundy reference?) to actually read through the rest of page today, but I accidentally logged on and clicked on your post first. So this is the only thread I think I'll read for now, but I agree with the sentiments in this thread. I think Barnes coached a masterful game actually, all things considered. Watching arguably the 2 best players in the game today battle it out did not disappoint, especially for the unbiased viewing public. I also hate how Edey is officiated. It's awful for the game. Easy for me to say as an opposing fan, but pick and roll...dunk then pick and roll...good D, back out and in, then he tosses up a 3 foot shot and is fouled. Rinse and repeat for 40 mins is a brutal way to watch a basketball game. Seeing how it was called and how they capitalized on it, I'm shocked we didn't lose by 25 points. Really a testament to how good our team is and how well we played that it was down to the wire until the end. Lastly, I saw Edey make some subtly derogatory comments about Barnes in the postgame. F him. Also, what a weird, weird dude. He looks and acts weird and his parents are weird. Loser. Ok, I feel slightly better now.

What a whining wuss. He gets touch fouls called in his favor constantly, yet still complains when someone defends him and isn’t called for a foul. He could shoot 40 free throws by himself and still whine. Also, Painter got in the refs’ heads before the game ever started and it ticks me off how easily manipulated they were.

But I think it's a set deal that the NCAA wants Edey vs. Burns (check) and Purdue vs. UConn (might as well be a check already), and come hell or high water they're going to get it. It's fixed. So there. Dude, there were obvious calls that should have been made on him, but he camped out in the lane for at least five or six seconds (and more) so many times I lost count. That was absolutely nuts. The refs just swallowed their whistles. I think they tried to fix the Creighton game but we overcame the refs' best efforts. Dude, the "screen" -- actually a chop block -- he "set" on the right wing that knocked Z halfway to the Vols bench? Really? REALLY? I really do think it has to do with the Nico deal and the blowback they got and their inability to punish the football team. I just said "dude" three times in one short paragraph... Okay so yeah, not pissed at the Vols. Just disappointed at the final result, but not really having anything to do with the Vols. And... I shouldn't be... I am very appreciative of him and what he has done since that first game against LSU... but really disappointed in Santi this year. I really think he's the guy that could have put us over the top. But I still love him. So there.

I can develop a dislike for someone because they are an opponent and are very good. However, my feelings for him are stronger, like I feel for Kentucky basketball, Alabama football (perhaps any sport), Will Wade, Dale Brown, Spencer Rattler, Shane Beamer, Drinkiwitz, etc. To those, one feels great satisfaction when things don’t go well for them.

I'm old school. I love a good post game. Big guys should be able to use their strength to get positioning and get good shots, which is the exact goal of an offense. And Vol fans never had any problem when grant Williams would get matched up on some skinny stretch four and muscle him out of the way (often while drawing a foul).
BUT that game was ruined by the officiating. You can't have a defender stay vertical and get called for a body foul, while letting Edey get away with everything. Either let 'em go and beat the crap out of each other or call the fouls. I'm good either way, but don't have two sets of rules.
As an aside, I don't think this was an anti-UT conspiracy, and I don't think the coaches' pre-game comments had anything to do with it either way. (But there might be a Purdue-lost-to-a-sixteen-seed overreaction, and Virginia might have received a benefit of that in 2019 too.) This is how he's been called all year. I read some Big 10 blog that quoted some director of officials talking about how refs don't want to call star players for fouls, because that's what the fans pay to see (and I think there are several on this board that agree with that). But it's very different when the star player is not only the offensive focus but also the defensive/rebounding focus. If you let a scoring wing get away with a touch foul or two, it really doesn't impact the game much. If you apply different rules in the paint, it distorts the game entirely, and that game was as distorted as any I've seen. Oh well.

we are gonna get screwed one way or the other. Maybe some player gets cancer his senior year, maybe he tears the labrum in his shooting shoulder, maybe we get a foul called for running into a shooter's outstretched leg with less than 5 seconds to play, maybe a 40% 3pt% shooter forgets how to shoot, maybe our center gets hurt in the 1st round game, maybe the best player we ever had hurts his hand before the 1st round game.... this year it was... maybe they let a 7-4 oaf with marginal athletic ability foul whenever he wants, change his mailing address to the lane and then they call fouls on anyone who glances in his general direction.
At least it happened a game later this year.
