This should be in the morning articles. Another excellent piece if you can read it (thanks T-Mobile for the free 6 months) on the Athletic.

I let my Athletic subscription go early this fall when it seemed only one out of every five articles was actually about sports (as opposed to politics) so i am no help there. But Bob Kloppenburg's system is explained in some measure of detail in these links. linklinklink

But I'll have devoured it by the time Bama rolls to town on Saturday. Thanks for linking.

Good find! I'll share to the Checkerboard if you don't mind it (crediting you). For anyone that wants to read any articles on the Athletic, I'm pretty sure they offer a free trial. Also, if anyone is a member, you can gift someone a free month to try it out. If anyone wants a free month, zap me your email in a PM and I'll fire over your way. But keep in mind, this is only for freeloaders here on the Hoopsville community, not for VIP paying checkerboard members. Ha! If you're on both sites, I'll allow it, but I want my disgust noted!
If you're genuinely just interested in a free month, with no intent to pay afterwards, I'd wait until mid Jan/Feb timeframe to read as basketball season will be in full swing and there will no more football to write articles about. Specifically on the UT side, the writers cover all sports (sometimes even Vandy and the Titans), so with no football to discuss, they'll offer up more hoops content.

the Athletic is such a good idea. When I had a subscription I remember this great article on how Dave Stewart (of the A's world series runs) learned his scowling mound presence from Sandy Koufax - directly from Sandy in spring training in Vero Beach when Stewart came up through the Dodgers system. Because back then Dodger greats would just hang out in spring training.
Koufax doesn't really give interviews but he did for this one.
Anyway, unfortunately I had to search for stuff like that in a sea of politics this, politics that - and honestly, if I wanted politics I can just got to facebook. I don't want to pay to read what sportswriters think about politics.

Anyway, unfortunately I had to search for stuff like that in a sea of politics this, politics that - and honestly, if I wanted politics I can just got to facebook. I don't want to pay to read what sportswriters think about politics. The hardest part for me regarding the Athletic is that in the end, I've found it's still similar to 247 in that the ultimate goal is to generate clicks. They just push content over quality, at least with their beat writers. David Ubben it seems is the main TN beat writer with Joe Rexrode covering more Vols, Vandy, Titans, etc. Ubben anyway has had some incredible stories on there over the past year or so, exactly like what you describe above. Lots of stories interviewing Vol fans that we see in memes, the backstory behind them. Or of a famous pick. It's like having BillVol in his ear and being able to tell the story behind the story that no one ever knew about. But then on 4 or 5 out of the other 7 days, he'll post an article that is just effectively a recap of Pruitt's press conference. Or there will be a day where the "article" is just a forum for fans to ask questions, and it's significantly less informative than if anyone would ask a question on here and have fellow fans subscribe.
I saw that KenPom was a contributor so I signed up. Early on I enjoyed being able to read about Grant Williams from a Celtics article, Cam Sutton from a Steelers one, then some Vols stuff, a men's soccer team article, etc. But after seeing 5 days in a row of just press conference recaps or whatnot, I'd lose interest and don't even go there any more. I'm not sure I've ever read a KenPom article on that site. I'll let my subscription lapse as well as now the only time I venture to the site is when I see an article linked from twitter, just like Bchild did below.
Honestly, I'd pay for a site that just discussed analytics. Basically an Athletic, but just all the sports nerds for the various teams and sports. I'm not sure there's a huge market for that, but so there are so many valuable contributors out there that are just doing it independently, that maybe someone could consolidate them all. Pdl, you should float the idea and start the site up. Throw your Vols previews on there too (but keep them free on here to us founding fathers)!

Hmmm. Seems there is a little more to the Vols' defense than just "hug up on your man and don't let him score!" No wonder it could take a little while for some players to know just what the team is trying to do at any given time and what they have to do to contribute to it. Also no wonder that opponents tend to get a little frustrated when everything is working the way it should because the complete defensive system anticipates everything. And finally no wonder that Barnes keeps talking about how much room the Vols have for improving their defense still further. Which can only be interpreted as extremely bad news for all future opponents!

You are the Entertainment & Sports Programming Network, not "Crossfire" or "The Firing Line". Stick to games. I remember Dave Stewart well. A buddy of mine adopted the A's as his team just because he loved Dave Stewart. I was a Red Sox fan so I was not thrilled with any suggestion that Stewart was better than Clemens. But for a few years, Stewart was really good.

But for a few years, Stewart was really good. and then you will get sportswriter guy who is indignant about a 'stick to sports' take... "i have interests other than sports', 'blah, blah, blah blah'. What (most) journos don't understand is I don't usually even care about their opinions about sports. I read them to find out things I did not know or read cool stories I would otherwise not have access to. That's their role in life. No shame in that. No need to be something bigger or take on something they think is more important. That's it.
