I tend to remember games from longer ago than more recent games, but I didn't remember the ending of the game as described by a caller to Tony Basilio today. Of course, back then, LSU seemed like Goliath next to us, and we were pretty good. The way the caller described it is the game ended and there was controversy with the clock. The clock operator forgot to start the clock, but the game ended. When the horn sounded, DeVoe had the Vols exit the arena immediately, still in uniforms, and then board the plane, still in uniforms. Meanwhile, Dale Brown was running up and down the sideline, trying to correct the error. I don't remember any of that. The caller related this to the '10 Music City Bowl. He said when the official said over the speakers that the game was over, Dooley should have taken the team off the field.

Dale was just chewing on that poor clock operator and the refs. DeVoe got the gang out of the locker room and straight onto the bus. As I remember, Ward and A.W. had to run to catch the bus. Basically, Tennessee inbounded the ball under the LSU basket with five seconds left, there were five seconds left when Michael Brooks passed mid-court. Enough time for Dale Ellis to take and miss and jumper and Dan Federmann to get the put back. Some year, I'll dig up my story from the game and post it here.

Yes, Dale Brown was quite unhappy.

"As I remember, Ward and A.W. had to run to catch the bus." That is great! Would love to read the story. What a great story. I never saw the SECT in Bham but have seen other games there and have been to the Sheraton, which is another brand now I beleive. The setting brings back good memories. Anyhow, what good fortune to not only run into all of those people, but to actually have some good interaction with them! Knocking on Dale's door is great. Somewhat related to that is when some friends and I were at The Omni for an NBA game. Dale was there as was Dominique Wilkins. Neither had entered the NBA yet. Nique was getting mobbed for autographs after the game, while our Ellis was being ignored. I told my friends, this sucks that Dale is being ignored and I'm going to go get his autograph. And guess what? He turned me down! I guess he thought I was just doing it to boost his morale. Whatever, I was pretty disappointed and had to go up to my friends empty handed. Still stings a bit, but I sure have never held it against him.

Not sure if I have this correct, but I think so... I thought it was just an in-bounds pass to Brooks after a DeVoe time out with about 9 seconds left. Brooks brought the ball up the floor, but the clock operator failed to start the clock for 2 seconds or so after the ball came in to Brooks. And Dan the man tipped in a missed shot with about 1 second left. Isn't that right? At any rate, it was a wild scene. Dale was pulling what little hair he had left out and screaming his head off, and nobody in orange was around for miles. Those were the days...

you know, there have been some strange things down in the bayou (or against the Tigers)....
the 82' game, the Doug Roth single finger salute, the Carlos Groves/Shaq fight, the Grant Williams 'foul'.

you know, there have been some strange things down in the bayou (or against the Tigers).... the 82' game, the Doug Roth single finger salute, the Carlos Groves/Shaq fight, the Grant Williams 'foul'. LSU got their payback with the ref-assist at the end of the football game in Dickey's first year. But since a win there may have only delayed Dickey's exit from Knoxville, I think maybe we owe LSU a favor for that one.
