While I think something like this NIL thing was all but inevitable at some point, it is clear to me that NOBODY has thought through all the implications of its effects on the "traditional" model of college sports. New and previously unsuspected connections and influences will continue to emerge. Alliances and rivalries will emerge from the most unexpected directions. The only thing we will know for sure is that the future will not look anything like the systems that have emerged over the last century of largely unplanned growth. Yeah, I think it will take awhile to see how this stuff shakes out, and there may never be a "normal" expectation. It may be there are different positive/negative impacts from one year to the next and from program to program.

I definitely agree it is a new angle that will be worked by some much better than others. An embracing it will be required for keeping up. I'll be curious to see if Bama has as much of an edge in doing this above board as they long have had in doing it under the table. I’d contend Ala, Ohio St, Notre Dame etc have a huge advantage now that things will be “above board” . Hypothetically let’s say our Dish Network guy was stuffing McDonalds bags full of cash because he wanted HIS SCHOOL to be more competitive on the field/court …. This is a self gratification type of action as he was trying do do what’s best for TN. Now above board he has to think of what is best for Dish Network so does giving the ALA, Ohio St, Notre Dame QB that $$ over the TN QB provide a bigger bang for his buck for HIS COMPANY my guess in today’s landscape the resounding answer would be yes.

I can see a couple of tracks - one where big business boosters of a school may focus on their alma mater's players, and another where companies that don't have a "dog in the fight" in terms of a favorite school among the top brass just want to do it in purely business terms.

Maybe. I contend that the playing field could be more level, especially now that an expanded playoff allows others to contend. As long as Saban is at bammer, they are gonna rule. They will come back to earth when he retires. I'll also argue it's still a cyclical sport. Can Peyton influence DISH and others? Maybe. Will he care to? IDK. But he could be the wildcard here as he does have tremendous influence. Can he use it to help Tennessee? I'd certainly be discussing it with him. My point again is I believe there is a huge opportunity for an athletic program like UT to take advantage here. I also gotta keep reminding myself that our leadership hasn't been what it should be either, so I'm not confident we will take advantage, but one can hope.
