I’m thinking about cancelling my sub now that hoopsville is gone and, frankly, half the CB is spewing ignorance re covid these days

The only sports message boards I care to ever look at again are this one and a few on Reddit. The rest have devolved into insane people screaming.

I was never a paying member of 247, so I didn't really have a choice, and they're not missing me.
But I actually left several months before they took down Hoopsville. Because they did that goofy thing of tying a lot of the threads to multiple forums, some free, some not free, anyone's post in the thread that came from the premium forum came up as a big block on the screen that said I couldn't read that post. It was really annoying and very challenging to maneuver through the threads where I could only read maybe half the posts, and I just got sick of doing it.

After 25 years on that board, I'm done with them when my annual membership ends in November.

my subscription ends in the spring. Right now I don't plan to renew, but I'm not mad at them and I guess I could be convinced to stay if the content improved.

I’m thinking about cancelling my sub now that hoopsville is gone and, frankly, half the CB is spewing ignorance re covid these days I cancelled my subscription after they killed hoopsville. I was a bit torn about it because I realize that’s how the four staffers keep their jobs, from people like me paying dues. Unlike pdl (who is much more mature), I was definitely mad about it though. But not necessarily that they killed hoopsville (disappointed for sure, but not really mad), but rather I was mad that they killed it and all of our thread history with no warning. I, hammy, pdl, wtm, and many others people often put tons of research and time into our posts and sometimes I’d refer back to those. I would’ve loved a heads up so that I could’ve gone back and saved/archived a few of them. Like think of wtm’s and pdl’s research they already did here on Barnes’ postseason numbers. Multiply that times a hundred and just...*poof*...all of of that was gone instantly. That’s why I was mad (and the fact that there was no discussion about it before or afterward, as Cherokee has more than pointed out). Maybe a warning to see if we wanted to renew our mbrship before they killed it? That’s the part of all of it that made me mad. Anyway, I was not and am not mad at any particular staffer there though, because I have no idea from whom the decision came. For me the ultimate decision to cancel was just that I payed for the membership b/c I wanted to support 247 for keeping that Hoopsville community around. When they killed the board, they killed the value for me, thus my decision to quit. All that said, I also empathize with them. It’s a tough business to be in for sure and even moreso nowadays with I’m sure lots of people with less disposable income than they might have had 6 months ago.

I’m thinking about cancelling my sub now that hoopsville is gone and, frankly, half the CB is spewing ignorance re covid these days I have kept my membership and will likely continue to do so primarily because I've been on it going back to the Gridscape days in the mid to late '90's. There is so much history as a member of that community, though I admit there is also a whole lot of nonsense on the board too - but that was always the case. I've never created problems on the board until recently, and I don't blame the local staff for the decision to drop Hoopsville, as they almost surely aren't the ones who made it. But I absolute DO blame them for the manner in which they implemented it and for their absolute refusal to own that mistreatment of members of the community with not even a hint of an apology for that mistake. So recently I've been about as much of a thorn in their side as I can be, making it crystal clear repeatedly on their board that there is precious little hoops discussion to speak of except during basketball season, and stating openly that their handling of the situation was abysmal. Grant happens to be the only one who has bothered to ever respond, and I do feel bad that he is apparently taking the brunt of people's anger as a result of the rest of them simply ignoring the matter and waiting for it to go away. I'll eventually let the issue go, maybe only the occasional reminder down the road when a topic lends itself to it, and remain on the board. But I'm extremely disappointed in the staff's cavalier attitude and willingness to treat a big group of Vol fans as total garbage.

As another of the original Gridscape gang I feel very strongly that we deserve far better treatment than we got.

But I'm extremely disappointed in the staff's cavalier attitude and willingness to treat a big group of Vol fans as total garbage. Your last sentence sums it up for me. As another of the original Gridscape gang I feel very strongly that we deserve far better treatment than we got. There are so many early Gridscape posters that have passed away over the years. Guido de Vol, volmayn, RobertnAtl, and others. I haven't seen CelticVol in some time either, and worry that maybe he is not with us any longer either. I know he had a LONG history of watching Vols' games in person that had to have him up there in age. But these boards can become almost like a second family for some at times, and I don't think the staff on sites like that understand it. While I know those sites need staff to provide content and a structure around which to build the community (which this site and Gridscape did NOT need), the real value to me of such sites has always been the community and great Vol (and non-Vol) discussions that have been fostered. I am not on a site like that so that I can find out news about a commitment maybe 24 hours (or often far less) than I would have found out about it for free anyway. And I'm not there to read the lame offseason articles they are forced to write to manufacture content when there's not a lot going on to write about. I'm there for the community of Vol fans. I can get a "Top ten coaches/tailgates/stadiums/traditions/blah/blah/blah" any time I want just by sitting in my bathroom and thinking for about 3 minutes. So when they handle a situation the way they did, it tells me they really don't get why a lot of people are there.

cherokee...either you've gotten a lot smarter and more articulate than I realized or I've learned to more fully appreciate you.

cherokee...either you've gotten a lot smarter and more articulate than I realized or I've learned to more fully appreciate you. You hang around smart people long enough and it eventually rubs off on you. I have definitely learned a lot more about hoops than I knew years ago, and still have ways to go on that. But maybe my logic and writing skills have improved a bit simply through practice. I have to confess that I do obsess over a grammatical error or poorly constructed thought or sentence, and often edit my posts to fix things I don't like.

But I'm extremely disappointed in the staff's cavalier attitude and willingness to treat a big group of Vol fans as total garbage. Yeah, it really bothered me how it has been handled. I didn’t even think about the fact that all the work pdl put in (which was by far better than anything the 247 writers produced) vanishing along with the board. That’s really sad honestly.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder why they didn't first try to make it a pay board, like they did the Summit. Yeah, there would have been grousing, but probably a majority of us would have signed up, eventually. By just blowing up the board in the dead of night, they alienated the Hoopsville community. I suspect they had no idea we'd just take off and create our own site, taking our clicks and views with us.

Fortunately for them, my annual membership renewed two weeks before the great disappearance.
We will see if I keep it. Discussion will mostly be here.
I will admit, I’m a football guy that was in college to play football. Pretty much all my friends (who are also much taller than I) are basketball guys. Basketball has always been my first passion among sports. So much to analyze.
Even still when I was in grad school in Vegas I did the football previews from sharps for betting analysis and to see what guys who made money on betting. Of course when I left Vegas, those stopped. To not even respond to a reasonable PM I sent them after doing that definitely rubbed me the wrong way.
In the month after, more content has been shared here. This stuff isn’t difficult to find. I don’t mind one bit cherokee bringing things to the other board either. Maybe I’m just not adult enough to not say something completely yet so I hold my tongue. Most likely anyone it’s pointed at isn’t the reason the hoops board is gone.
