And that's a good thing. If you look at our targets, a significant percentage of them are also on the Gonzaga list. I know that Barnes and Few are good friends and it seems their ideas about players are similar, lots of high skill, international players who they may spot early. Building relationships with the kids gives you an in with later players from the same mold.
Barnes was early in the recruiting of Canadian players, but it seems Tennessee has expanded well beyond that recently.

we could do worse. We could have adopted the Cuonzo Martin recruiting model, or the Buzz Peterson coaching model, or the bald Kevin #1 public relations model, or the Wade Houston defense model, or the Don DeVoe refusal to change model.

Wasn't it the 3 point shot that basically killed DeVoe's run? He had UT in 5 straight NCAAT's, which was I believe the first time we had ever done that (and didn't do it again, plus some, until Pearl). I also think I recall that you were going to sit on the bench with DD if you didn't bust your tail on defense.

Don started out on fire and it looked like he might keep things rolling from where Mears was. But he followed those 5 tourney appearances with 5 years out of the tourney, the shot clock came in in 1985 and the three point line in 1987 and DeVoe wasn't interested in changing much. He started the decline that Wade Houston would accelerate.

I think it's the most sustainable (I hate that word in most current conversations) "mid-major" recruiting model that a "high major" could emulate. You get high major talent without always competing with Duke, UNC, Kansas for the players. Also, most of the kids targeted are in Rick's comfort zone - somewhat hungry to be taught and generally from two-parent families.
