#9 O, #1 D Don't remember us ever being that high... And, of course, AU would have to be KP #1…

#9 O, #1 D Don't remember us ever being that high... We have been #1 before. But still. Golden Age of UT hoops and all. And with a squad I thought would be a 5 or 6 seed.

Idk yet , I need to see our mid major guys getting beat on by SEC guys 2x/week before I believe they’re not a 4 seed. Personally I think Lanier will end up being a guy easily defended

In the offseason, I remember saying that I really liked the team on paper. Then the exhibition and first couple of games happened, and I didn’t like the eye test. Turns out, that was just early season nerves or sloppiness, I guess.
I really like this group, even without Estrella. The defense is still there, and we have a larger than usual collection of guys who make open shots, some bouncy bigs that know their roles, and another super shooter.
There’s no dominant star (although Lanier is close to that), but the shooting and offense is spread around more than maybe any other Rick team. And we don’t have multiple guys in the starting lineup anymore that try to hide on offense.

If you had asked me coming into this season if I'd take a 4 seed, I would probably say yes.

While we were like, yup it was a good run but 5 seed it is. I’m sure we will discuss numbers, but it doesn’t feel like the defense ever drops off. The rebounding, especially on offense looks different. When they have put limited scoring lineups on the floor, they still defend at a high level. They trademark Dalton avalanche has been spotted with Lanier, but also with defense. What also gets me is the secondary break and the speed at which they will take the first shot before running offense. Really nice blend so far.

Going 6-24 and getting to the FF will be quite the accomplishment. Unfortunately, some bad news on that front. 6-24 is now mathematically eliminated. We have won our 7th game of the year. I’m going to have to do some recalculating

As we marvel over the Vols ascension to elite status in college basketball, may I offer this observation. Don Devoe was an excellent coach when the rules of the game benefited his preferred style of play. When the shot clock and three point shot came to the game in the mid 1980's, he failed to adjust, and his teams fell into mediocrity. Rick Barnes has shown himself to be a master at adapting to changes in the game. His agenda had been defense first and only, but he has come to realize that his demands for elite defense must be tempered with elite offensive players. In conjunction with that, he has found his way in the era of the transfer portal and NIL. I went back over the last five years and found that skill level of transfer athletes has drastically improved. His early efforts provided little... E.J. Anosike and Justin Powell were busts; Victor Bailey Jr. and Tyreke Key were average rotation players at best; whereas Jordan Gainey has improved to the point of being a solid contributor; and Dalton Knecht was a 1st team All-American. This year, he is four for four out of the transfer portal... In Igor Miličić Jr, Chaz Lanier, Felix Okpara and Darlinstone Dubar, he has found three starters and a solid rotational player on a top five team. And that sports fans is why we celebrate a 70 yr old coach and harbor hopes for the Vols first final four.

Bunch of KP top 10s for this team already this year.
UTM was the 2nd best 2PT% in any game in the KP era (Back to 1996). 3 of the Vols top 10 2PT% performances have come this year and 7 of the top 10 are from Barnes teams.
The past two games have both been KP top 10 marks in 3PA% and 6 of the top 10 are from Barnes era.
Austin Peay game was the 8th best OE% for the Vols in the KP era. UTM game was the 5th best OR% mark.
UTM game was the 4th best DE%, the lowest # of points scored by an opponent and the 9th best def eFG% mark of the KP era.
Montana was the 10th best def OR%.
The Vols are now forcing their opponents into the longest average defensive possession length in the country. #364 out of 364.
Cade Phillip is 8th in the country in OR%. I did not see that one coming.
