AUSTIN PEAY 3-0 KP #206
The Vols non-conference schedule marches on this Sunday at 3PM EST with an in state non-conference tilt against the Austin Peay Governors. AP was picked 2nd in the A SUN coaches poll, 3rd in media 4th in the Blue Ribbon. The Govs lost 4 of 5 top scorers from last year’s 19-16 squad that finished 4th in conference. They are coached by Corey Gipson who is in his 2nd yr in Clarksville after one season at Northwestern State. Though he has only coached for three years, the few teams he has had have all played really slow. So far his AP teams don’t turn it over and they don’t shoot threes often at all, they get some of the fewest assists of any team in the country. So far this season they are +300 in 3PA% and in A%.
The Govs have picked up a ‘name’ win already in the nonconference as they won at Butler – though to be honest it has been 7 years since Butler even made an NCAAT. AP also beat UT Chatt in “ASUN/SCON challenge” and they opened the season with a win over my alma mater, D2 Union University.
They are led by LJ Thomas (6-2, 199lb Jr) a transfer from NC State who is putting up 19.7pts and 6.7 boards on the young season. Thomas played sparingly in Raleigh but so far this season he is taking 18.3 shots a game. True definition of a volume scorer who does not take many threes, he is hitting 50% inside the arc but not getting to the line. A whopping 46% of his shots are from the mid range. 39% of shots at rim where he is converting 63.6%. Thomas is good on the glass for this size. There are exactly 9 players in the country 6-2 or shorter who have an OR% over 6.5% and a DR% over 14.5%, Thomas is at 6.8%/14.7%. He scored 29 in the win over Butler. Stocky, not overly quick, looks to get in the lane.
Sai Witt – (6-8, 270lb, SR) averaged 12.8pts 5.6 boards last yr when he was the ASUN 6th man of the yr. This season he finds himself on the preseason all ASUN squad. So far this season he is at 12 pts and 4.7 boards. He is exclusively an inside player who lives at the FT line - 75.5% FTR last year. Witt was 2nd in the nation in FD/40 at 8.0. He is excellent on the glass on both ends. Prone to do some fouling himself. Almost 85% of his shots at the rim last year, but only he only converted at 57%, so far this season he is below 50% at the rim. Big guy, round, bunch of moves around the basket. Not a big leaper, deceptively quick. Looks like a solid low major player.
According to Torvik, their best player is Hansel Enmanuel – (6-6, 167lb Jr) with a 5.0 player rating. He followed Coach Gipson over from Northwestern State. Enmanuel is 2nd on the team with 6 boards a game. 90% of his attempts at the rim, he doesn’t take threes, 2nd on team in blocks last yr, 3rd in OR. Long, quick jumper, plays a bunch. Not a good free throw shooter. Oh yeah, did I mention that he only has one arm?
Quan Lax - (6-2, 188lb Jr) won state title at Bolivar, won NAIA national title at Freed Hardeman last year. Small but active. 7.7pts a game on 6.7 shots. Has taken exactly zero mid-range shots. 25% of his attempts have been at the rim and 75% have been from three. Considerable step up in competition for him this season.
Isaac Haney (6-2,191lb Sr) 11.7pts and 4.7 boards. Shot 37.8% from three last yr and got 38% of his shots at the rim, had a 47% FTR. Doesn’t turn it over. Preseason all ASUN
Tekao Carpenter (6-3, 190lb Jr) is a JUCO transfer who appears to be just a shooter. He is 7-11 from three with 5 of those makes coming against Union, he hasn’t taken a 2pt shot and has no rebounds, assists or free throws in the two D1 games.
So, yeah, Austin Peay is off to a very good start on the season and has moved up almost 70 spots in the KP in only two D1 games. They look like they have a roster that can be very competitive in the Atlantic Sun but they really shouldn’t be competitive in this one. Their top 6 guys go 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, 6-6 and 6-8; and their 6-6 guy (Enmanuel) weighs in at only 167lbs. The Govs are small (though they do have a 6-10 guy who plays 11 minutes a game) and they don’t really do anything that stands out as a low major upset threat. They don’t shoot a bunch of threes, they play slow, they don’t shoot the ball particularly well. They have a go to guy, but he is not a very efficient player. Have a decent big with some savvy, but he isn’t all that efficient either.
Vols are 24pt favorites on the KP and 28pt favorites on Torvik and if Tennessee shows up interested in this one, then those numbers seem about right. The Govs are small out front and the Vols should be able to get open looks and get in the lane. Looks like another chance to let the end of the bench guys get some decent minutes and hopefully see Carr, and Bishop and maybe even Dubar have some nice minutes.
None of that matter, of course, because they HAVE A PLAYER WITH ONLY ONE ARM!!! That is it, that is the whole story for this game - I want to see Hansel Enmanuel play against this Vols team - and I suspect that he will be the focus of the broadcasters call of the game because, you know, he is playing D1 basketball WITH ONLY ONE ARM.
so yeah, there is that.
