Neither starter was worth a bucket of warm spit.
All but one run in the game were scored in the first two innings, and 18 of the 19 hits in the game came in the first three innings.
A.J. Causey's stat line was sort of weird. In 1.1 innings, he gave up 8 hits, no walks, 8 earned runs and all four of his outs were K's.
And I was hopeful that Billy Amick might be back in the lineup this weekend, but he didn't play tonight. It may be a week too soon for him to try to play after his appendix was removed.

In the top of the 1st, Moore doubled, Burke doubled and Tears homered. The Vols have jumped out 3-0, and are still batting with two outs and nobody on.

Not so much, Causey has given up 5 runs in the bottom half. We were up 3-2 with 2 outs and 2 on and he gave up a homer. The Vols trail 5-3 with AU still batting in the 1st. Edit: A K ends the inning, but the Vols are down, 5-3.

Top of the 2nd, after Ensley flies out, Stark singles and Moore homers to tie the game at 5-5.
That's all the Vols get in the 2nd, and AU is coming to bat, tied at 5 apiece.

Yes, it seems like we give up at least 1 run, sometimes more, in the first inning way too often.

Causey is getting lit up. AU had runners on the corners after a double and bunt single, and another single gives the Tigers the lead back, 6-5. Runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.
Edit: AU pushes three across in the 2nd to lead, 8-5. The Vols are coming to bat in the T3.

After two innings, the two teams have combined for 17 hits.
It's a pitcher's duel.

In the top of the 3rd, with runners on 1B and 3B, two outs and Burke at bat, UT tries the double steal. The C throws to the SS who then fires home to cut down Ensley easily.
Let's just say I wouldn't have called that with Blake Burke, batting .411 with 10 homers, at bat.

We like starting in a hole. We're in a tough spot in our starting rotation. Causey has been inconsistent, Beam is solid, but not really outstanding, Russell of course has missed a good chunk of the season and will miss several more weeks. Our game threes are basically bullpen games from start to finish, and a lot depends on how many relievers we have to use in game 1 and 2. We try to balance the use of our bullpen in games 1&2 vs. game 3 in order to maximize our chances of winning the most games we can in each series. I think we will likely be a .500-ish team in SEC play this season, but also think we still might get hot late if Russell can come back in time and shake off the rust quickly enough to help us in the postseason.
