Man! That was exciting to read...and it scared the heck out me at the same time. While I realize SI isn't the SI of old people still assign more than passing value to what they publish. That's the part that scares me the most. People may begin to harbor expectations for the Vols that potentially could be a burden for the team throughout the season. Setting the bar too high can make what promises to be a great season seem to be a disappointment if we don't win it all.
While we may have that much potential, I agree that is time to apply the brakes an slow the heck down!

I asked a huge hoops head, Knoxville native and long-time Vols fan last night what he thought reasonable expectations were for this team, below which would be a disappointment. He is not prone to hyperbole or getting caught up in hype. Level-headed guy who I've known forever. His answer ...
"Elite Eight"
Gulp.

So anything below our best ever finish, which we've only accomplished once in our history, is a failure...got it!

Though, at this point I just figure the season won't even happen as that would be the most Vol hoops thing ever.

CRB doesn't get a pass, I don't think. He and his staff have assembled the talent you need to compete at that level. Great. Time to go do it ... ya know, if there's actually a season and all that.

Well, that's EXACTLY what happened to the baseball team, which was off to its most promising start in AGES, so...COVID.

Exactly. If we aren't to expect that kind of success, then someone tell me now and we can bill Rick Barnes for a partial refund of his salary. He's paid with the big boys, so we should expect that we start getting those type of results in the most meaningful part of the season in a sport basically defined by it. That may not sound fair, but that's the situation and all involved understand it. I would say, yes, "disappointing" if we fall short of the Elite Eight. Look at the roster - if we can't expect that kind of tourney success now, what do we think we have to have to expect it? Five lottery picks in the lineup? Come on. Freaking AUBURN has been to the Final Four with a team that didn't have this much talent. So yeah, I expect a deep March run. I like Rick and am not trying to set him up for failure, but you can't make that type of money and not understand that expectations go up

Any chance CRB had to ride some wave of "goodwill" or whatever to lower expectations ended when he wanted to leave for another job and basically forced UT to pay him like a national championship-level coach. And ... hey, don't hate the player, right? Not personal, just business? He doesn't really want to be here, he's just here because UT was where he could get paid the most? Cool. No problem. We all know where we stand now. If it's all about money for CRB, then it should be all about winning for UT and Vols fans. Let's put aside any naive notions of loyalty and love of the Big Orange or whatever. He wants to be a business man, well, he better be in the business of winning because that's the business UT is paying him for.
